English - Reading @ OMS

At Olney Middle School, we see reading as both a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching across all subjects; for pupils, understanding language and intent of texts provides access to the whole curriculum. Our reading spines for each year group consist of a selection of carefully chosen, high-quality texts where children are immersed into different worlds and settings and encouraged to question their own understanding and interpretation of what they have read, enriching their learning and harnessing a love of reading. We have high expectations of all children and we encourage children to challenge themselves, persevere and pursue success, always striving for greatness. Our reading teaching follows a bespoke model for effective teaching of reading designed to support the DfE’s Reading Framework for Primary Schools, known as our WORDING way.

Read Write Inc Phonics
When joining our school and alongside information from our feeder schools, we baseline assess children’s reading ability. The assessments enable us to begin a Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics program for those children who require it to ensure any gaps in their phonological knowledge are addressed and closed. Read Write Inc is an ambitious, systematic synthetic phonics program which enables children to read accurately and fluently whilst developing and supporting their comprehension. Children are placed into their phonics group based on their phonological knowledge – RWI Phonics in Year 3&4; RWI Fresh Start in Year 5&6. As all children learn at a different speed, children will receive phonics support until their phonological knowledge is secure and can be applied effectively to the reading and spelling.
