English - Writing @ OMS

Writing is a crucial part of our curriculum at Olney Middle School. By the end of Year Six we intend our children to have developed a love of writing and to be able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly and creatively through the written word allowing them to become successful, life-long learners. We aim to ensure our children develop a genuine love of language and vocabulary which we achieve through the use of carefully chosen, high-quality texts which their writing and reading are based around.

Teaching children to write for a range of purposes and audiences can be very exciting, especially here at Olney Middle School where each writing lesson provides a range of engaging hooks to capture their imagination! Following the writing process of motivate, generate ideas, write, evaluate and challenge,  we encourage our children to set themselves ambitious targets and reflect on their writing throughout lessons. We also intend to create writers who can re-read, edit and improve their own writing, and enable pupils to confidently use the essential skills of grammar, punctuation and spelling. At Olney Middle School, we set high expectations for all our children to take pride in their work and have a fluent, cursive handwriting style alongside allowing their imaginations to flourish.
